The Southwest American tradition of ‘lighting the way’ on Christmas Eve can be traced to 16th century Spain when small fires were lit along roadways to guide worshipers to evening services. The Fox Hill subdivision custom was started by early residents of Fox Hill Filing I (South of 5th Ave.) in the late 1970s and has been sponsored by the Filing I HOA since 1982. As Filings II & III (North of 5th Ave.) grew, individuals here adopted and expanded this signature neighborhood tradition. Since its formation in 1997, the Filing II & III HOA has sponsored this activity in our part of the subdivision. Both HOAs have work parties on Christmas Eve to construct luminarias by putting candles in sand-filled paper bags. All ages participate and kids enjoy helping with delivery along our streets and sidewalks. Filing I places approximately 1000 while Filings II & II place approximately 1400 for a combined Fox Hill neighborhood total of 2400 luminarias. We enjoy the appearance of our neighborhood decorated with luminarias and others from Longmont drive through on Christmas Eve to observe the sights. The candles are lit at dusk, burning throughout the night; there is a sense of quiet and serenity later in the evening, especially if you can catch it on a night when snow is falling.
